Health Care Diversity
The healthcare industry is facing major customer service and communication challenges with the growing diversity of medical staff and patient populations. For example, the top ten foreign-born populations in the United States, according to the US Census Bureau, are Mexico, China, the Philippines, India, Vietnam, the Dominican Republic, Korea, El Salvador, Jamaica and Cuba. Ten countries – ten very different cultures. In light of new governmental initiatives that will provide consumers with hospital rankings based on patients’ rating of hospital services it is critical that facilities offer top quality customer service while retaining and supporting nursing and medical staff.
IOR’s Cultural Competence in Healthcare programs are designed to improve health care delivery at the organizational (workforce), structural (process of care) and clinical (provider to patient) levels. IOR partners with health care providers creating programs customized for their institution’s specific needs and demographics.
Health Care Diversity programs:
- Increase participant’s self-awareness about personal beliefs and attitudes that influence interactions with colleagues and clients
- Enhance participant’s sensitivity and receptivity to diverse patient populations
- Teach participants to recognize a broad range of perspectives regarding health
