Hosting Chinese Nationals
Ask the Culture Coach
Dear Culture Coach,
Our company will be hosting some of our Chinese colleagues in the near future. Do you have any advice or suggestions on how to go about that?
Sincerely,
U.S. Pharmaceutical
Dear U.S. Pharmaceutical,
It is great to hear that you will be hosting your Chinese colleagues in the U.S. and there are, in fact, important cultural considerations to keep in mind. Firstly, the Chinese have a strong hosting tradition in their culture that differs from how we perceive hosting in the U.S. Because of our emphasis on individualism and private time, U.S. companies often do not spend as much time and effort with visitors from abroad as they should.
It will be important to show more attention and give more time to your Chinese guests than you are used to. Make sure to have someone meet them at the airport and accompany them to their hotel. This is a crucial first step that is frequently overlooked. Plan some group oriented activities for them that feature aspects of U.S. culture. Hosting a barbeque is a great way to entertain them and share an important American tradition.
One company took their Chinese guests to an employee’s Little League game and had them throw the first pitch, which was a terrific success. Make sure to ask them if they have any special interests and requests, as it is considered rude for them to simply tell you directly what they would like to do.
Make sure to build plenty of time around them, even at the office, and it is a good idea to assign them different “company guides” who can show them around and make introductions.
Remember, China is a highly group oriented culture, so leaving your guests “time for themselves” can end up making them feel isolated and neglected.
Good luck and enjoy your Chinese guests!
