Ask the Culture Coach
I am responsible for the talent management of our Indian Service Center and have been noticing a high rate of turnover. Do you have any advice on how to keep the talent I hire from heading out the door to the competition?
Sincerely,
U.S. Financial in India
Dear U.S. Financial in India,
One innovative way of improving retention rates is to involve employee family members in the workplace. Many leading Indian companies create programs allowing family members to visit the employee’s workplace, particularly the parents. The sense of group and family identity in India is much greater than in the United States, and family members help shape an employee’s attitude and approach to work. If the family is happy and pleased with the employer, that will go a long way to shape motivation.
It is also important to spend more time and money on employee development programs. The young Indian generation is very keen to learn and develop professionally, which is one of the major reasons there is so much turnover. If the employer can prove to the employee that they will learn more by staying with them then you are more likely to retain them. This means that more time and energy needs to be devoted to creating meaningful learning opportunities for your employees and then marketing that to them.
Good luck,
